Observed as early as the 1600s, this phenomenon has created nearly biblical quantities of rainfall. Centuries of runoff have deposited layer upon layer of nutrient-rich sediment from surrounding
hillsides right smack on the valley floor. Grapes happen to like this. And so, it follows, do people who drink wine.
